Veteran American writer and researcher Michael Knights talked about the liberation of the city of Aden (southern Yemen) at the hands of Emirati forces, and preventing its fall into the hands of the Houthi militia - the Iranian arm in Yemen.

Knights, a Lafer Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, who specializes in military and security affairs for Iraq, Iran, Yemen and the Gulf states, and author of the book "25 Days to Aden: The Unseen Story of Arab Elite Forces in War," said Knights, a fellow in the Lafer Fellowship Program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.  In Yemen, I was with the Saudi, Emirati and Yemeni forces, and one of the places I was with them was Aden.

He added, in an interview with "Sky News Arabia" on the program "With Giselle": "I was in Aden before the so-called Arab Spring, and I loved the city, and therefore I wanted to tell the audience about the battle in Aden, and there was a different situation in 2015."

Regarding the lessons he drew from the battle, the American writer said: "When the Arab forces want to stand with their allies, in this case Yemen, they can do so even without the United States."

He added, "In the battle of Aden, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates deployed their forces to support the Yemeni resistance without the support of the United States. The Gulf countries established this alliance to ensure that neither Iran nor the Houthi group will control Yemen."

    Brave fight

He recounted the details of the beginning of the battle, saying: "In one case, especially during the early days of the battles, the Houthis began to make progress through the use of tanks. When the first soldiers from the Emirates arrived in Aden, the Yemenis said how can these Houthi tanks be stopped and they must leave, but the Emiratis stood firm and said do not worry and we will deal with them."  command".

He continued, "There was a combination of Emirati special forces in the field with Emirati-Saudi aircraft, and with this collaboration, they had destroyed more than 20 tanks in a few hours, and after that hope began to prevail."

He quoted the Yemenis in Aden as saying: "If there were only a small number of Arab forces to stop the Houthis from advancing, perhaps there is an opportunity for us to hold out and advance further.. This is what they did and they held out for months until they became more powerful to attack the Houthis to force them to recede and retreat kilometers from the place where they were  They are in it."

    humanitarian mission

"Emirati and Saudi soldiers have toured Yemen and learned a lot from the experience of the war," said Michael Knights.

He continued, "There was aid provided to the Yemenis and they (Emirati and Saudi soldiers) participated in it. In the midst of the battle, there were beautiful humanitarian things that I touched in the Emirati and Saudi soldiers, which is their closeness to the Yemeni population and they provided a lot of humanitarian aid."
